In the early days of Capitola-by-the-Sea, beach goers were not necessarily concerned about getting too much sun exposure. In the 1920s though, beach umbrellas and personal parasols became fashionable accessories as in this photograph of the Daubenbiss family lounging on Capitola Beach. By the end of the 1920s, beach parasols and umbrellas became less fashionable when style queen Coco Chanel helped popularize tanning as the height of chic. (Capitola Historical Museum)
